The space between one breath and the next. Not a scene a state.
Nothing happens in this portrait. That is the subject.
Some works are meant to be seen. This one is meant to be lived with.
There is a moment so subtle it usually goes unnoticed the space between one breath and the next, between a thought forming and a thought dissolving.
This drawing was made from that pause. Not as a scene. As a state.
I find myself pulled more and more toward what exists before action. Before expression. Before noise takes the mind back.
Nothing happens in this portrait, and that is the entire subject. She is not posed for us and not performing anything. She is simply between two moments, and I wanted to hold her there long enough for someone else to recognise the feeling.
Some works are meant to be seen. Others are meant to be lived with. This one belongs to the second kind it does not compete with a room, and it does not exhaust itself on the first viewing.
Drawn with one grade of pencil across hours over months. A single grade means the darkness in this sheet was not selected, it was accumulated layer over layer until the black behind her sits deep enough to feel like air rather than paper. There is no faster route to that quality and no way to repair it after the fact.
